Letter of intention

My name is André Rondahl, 22 years old and applying for a spot in the Computer Graphic Arts program.

This is the third time I apply for the The Animation Workshop. I’m extremely determined and I have analyzed all the critique you gave me previous years and used it to further improve my drawing techniques. Now I once again feel ready to submit a new portfolio for the Computer Graphic Arts program, hopefully good enough to give me the opportunity to devote my 3,5 upcoming years at The Animation Workshop.

I entered the world of animation at the age of 16 when I started my education at the Eksjö gymnasiums animation program. I didn't know a lot about animation back then and had no idea of the extent of how big the area is. Three years later I graduated and continued my education for 2 years at the Sörängens Folkhögskolas animation course, regularly during this time I noticed that I tend to pull towards the designing aspect rather than the animation itself. Now my perspective is bigger than before and I know how many cogs that are needed to have a working movie production. When I´m drawing I specifically love to create backgrounds and worlds, where my designed characters interact. That's why my cog fit in there as a skilled concept artist. I want to be able to share my thoughts and ideas with art as my language. That's why I chose The CGA-program as the perfect education for my particular interests and skill sets.

During my 5 years studying animation I have created 2 animated short movies both screened at a local cinema. These movies are created in its entirety by myself, from early script to the finished film. Therefore I have the experience about the process as a whole. However, one of the biggest reasons I'm so interested in the CGA-program and The Animation Workshop is the fact that many projects are done with bigger or smaller groups from all the courses within the school. I'm thrilled to be able to get to know new people and work as a group. Also to use all the talents and learn from all the different views and skills others have, and together work towards a common goal. It's something I yet have to do and I know it's a vital part of the industry.

(I included one of my short movies in previous portfolio and my newest has its premiere date in May so none of them are in my portfolio for you to see.)

I have experience in using Adobe Photoshop, Premiere pro and Tv paint. I feel comfortable using all these programs daily. I have briefly tried to work a little bit with Maya and After Effects, but only know the very basic foundations of the programs and I have never tested Zbrush. However, I'm extremely eager to learn more about these tools that are used professionally in the industry every day.

A trend in the movie industry which I don't like, is this 21st century's obsession with superheroes. Movies like Suicide squad, Batman VS superman and Doctor strange. It feels like every third movie in the cinema is a marvel's cinematic universe movie nowadays. It's a financial success so all other companies join this trend which makes every super hero movie feel bland and boring. The originality is lost because its follow the same formula from what they know worked in the past. On the other hand, movies I love are the old Disney classics I grew up with. Disney classics such as: the Lion King, Beauty and the beast and Tarzan. Those movies were the ones that inspired me to start drawing and begin my journey towards my dreams. Thanks to Disney I found my calling in life and that’s why their movies have been a huge inspiration and located in a special place within my heart. In recent years I have gotten to adore the director Hayao Miyazaki and his animated movies like Spirited away and Howl´s moving castle. His peaceful yet intriguing way to convey a story is truly amazing and I love the worlds where you can drown in all the beautiful details in each and every scene. It is hard not to compare yourself when you watch such masterpieces. However movies like these fuel the flame within the core of my heart to keep practice and push myself that extra mile with all my work, so that someday I can leave my very own unique mark in someone’s life.

I´m used to travelling, and taking the step to move abroad isn’t something I find difficult, on the contrary I´m looking forward to it. This is an industry where I belong, and has known so for the past 6 years. My ambition is to keep learning, further develop my talents and with hard work be able to leave a huge enough impression to land myself a future within the animation branch. The Animation Workshop is the school that offers the education I need to be able to take that next step.

I plan to finance my studies with student loans (CSN).

I hope we will meet soon, sincerely

André Rondahl
